ALEXANDER MCQUEEN KEEBS ADORNING BAGS SUMMER 2011

Despite the fact Alexander McQueen himself is no longer with us his legacy, his iconic fashion label that bears his name, is alive and keeps making us happy with new amazing designs, sometimes feminine and then totally crazy. For Spring/ Summer 2011 the brand launched a diverse collection of bags which comprises lots of styles to every taste

There are plenty of clutches in Alexander McQueen Spring/ Summer 2011 collection. Some are simple and versatile, made of reptile leather and adorned with just a few details. Others come in more elaborated designs – decorated with brass knuckles, skulls, fringing, flower and leaves patterns.

BANANA REPUBLIC 2011

The designer captured quite a few Fall trends. There were tissue-thin cotton turtlenecks (like the ones we saw a month back at Celine) layered under tunic blouses; classic plaid and herringbone patterns in charcoal shades, which looked best on a slim pair of jodhpur-y pants; and "Dunaway-esque" cloches and brogue heels to finish the looks. As for the texture Kneen was eager to highlight, it came across most clearly in a nubby heritage sweater worn with a winter white brocade pencil skirt. A camel, double-face wool topcoat, which the creative director described as a deconstructed take on the trench, was a standout. And while it was could've been the Alana Zimmer factor, we wanted to nab the model's simple, dove gray leather bomber with shearling collar and slouchy Lurex beanie.

On the boys' side, it was about toughened-up tailoring. A double-breasted suit jacket or leather peacoat worked well with comfortable yet polished wool drawstring trousers. To top it all off: "bad boy" fedoras. Like a lot of other pieces in this show, we've seen them elsewhere before, but they still have street-style cred.

BALMAIN FALL 2011 : CONFUSION AMIDST THE OPULENCE

Every runway show ends the same way: all the models walk the finale and then the designer emerges, waves, and darts off. After Balmain‘s fall 2011 show, there was an awkward silence as the label’s creative director, Cristophe Decarnin, failed to appear. Buyers and editors sat in their seats as the lights came up instead of making a beeline for the door. The question on everyone’s mind: Where was CRISTOPHE DECARNIN ?
According to WWD, “the designer was absent under doctor’s orders, after having recently been released from the hospital, where he was said to have been treated for depression. A Balmain spokesman said Decarnin was involved in the design.”
The news of Decarnin’s absence due, reportedly, to depression shouldn’t completely overshadow the clothes that came down the runway. Working with new stylist Melanie Ward (she replaced Emmanuelle Alt), the collection was less grungey and gaudy than seasons past, but still opulent enough to rival the overly ornate setting for the show at the ballroom at Le Grand Hotel. There were less beat up jeans and tattered tees and more glammed out shiny leather suiting and beaded body suits a la Jem and the Holograms. Of course there were the strong shoulders, this time covered in fur. The thick long sleeved minidresses, striped in thick strips of gold and brocade and mirrors–a magpie’s delight–were standouts.

HANDBAGS FROM VERSACE 2011

I’m as surprised by this as you are, but the handbags from Versace Fall 2011 are more than a little great. The big, soft hobos in various textures and color combinations aren’t on-trend or directional or any of those other fashion buzzwords, but they do look like they’d be functional and wearable and all of those other buzzwords that matter to people who actually need to use their handbags.
My favorites were the quilted and re-quilted versions with plenty of decorative stitching, but it would be difficult not to also enjoy the burgundy crocodile and blue python iterations. And what of the bedazzled Medusa-head evening bag? I even loved it, if only for its unabashed, enthusiastic commitment to being as Versace as humanly possible

CELINE HANDBAGS FALL 2011

Considering Celine’s track record of re-imagining classic handbag shapes over the past few seasons, it was only a matter of time before Phoebe Philo’s accessories crew made its way to the doctor bag. Having made fashion hits out of a leather box bag on a long strap an ornately trimmed shopping tote (not to mention launching a thousand copycats at nearly every price point), Celine Fall 2011 turned its sites on two traditional accessory staples: the frame satchel and the flat clutch.
Celine’s handbag aesthetic works so well because the brand is careful to pick shapes and ideas that lend themselves to Philo’s particular brand of disciplined traditionalism. And of course, these bags carry on the brand’s New Minimalist ethos quite well, stripping both shapes down to their most basic components and then realizing them in the most pristine and exacting way possible. It’s a method that has proved incredibly successful in the past, and these bags will no doubt continue that streak.

FASHION HANDBAGS: FENDI SPRING 2011

Can I get a standing ovation for Fendi?

It wasn’t all that many seasons ago that the brand’s accessories department seemed to be in a bit of a post-Spy Bag aesthetic flux. There were too many logos, too many underdeveloped ideas and too little editing. From the looks of it, the brand has come out of its slump in fine form with Fendi Spring 2011, the brand’s third brilliant major accessories collection in a row. Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence but three times is a trend – get on the Fendi bus.

For spring, Fendi’s runway accessories are all about incorporating color in a classic way. No bag was graced with fewer than two different shades, and almost all of them incorporated the various colors on leathers of different textures.
