DIANE VON FURSTENBERG SPRING 2012

As we already discussed in our general review of Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2012, DVF was all about lightness for spring, much more so than usual, and that choice certainly carried over into the season’s handbags. There are a lot of whites, ivories, lilacs and dove greys to be found among these leather goods, with an occasional shot of emerald or cobalt to make sure that everyone stays awake .

FENDI FALL 2011 PREVIEW : ABIT OF A THROWBACK

While paging through the handbags from Fendi Fall 2011, I kept waiting for the brand’s trump card. For the bag that would pull the whole thing together and make me sit up and pay attention. And while there are some very attractive options from the collection, unfortunately that bag never came. Perhaps after Spring 2011′s stellar lineup of Fendi accessories, I was expecting too much.

Fall continues some of the biggest hits from that line, including the ladylike multicolor satchels with crocodile flaps, and it also introduces several more multicolor options in the form of slouchy totes and shoulder bags with elongated straps. Some of these asymmetrically shaded designs work better than others, and I hope to see them hit retail in bright combinations as well as the neutrals seen here. For now, my collection winner in the blue patent shoulder bag that you see above.

BOTTEGA VENETA HANDBAGS

Bottega Veneta handbags were created by eponymous Italian fashion house in 1966 in Vicenza. They are light, soft, perfect cut, noble not bright colors. For the first thirty years “a little shop” in Vicenza offered only one bag by Bottega Veneta. Other products such as shoes, clothing, leather goods, which are also applauded by fashionable women around the world began to appear at the end of the last century.

SNEAK PEEK : CHANEL FALL 2011 HANDBAGS

For those of you who were disappointed that Chanel’s Fall 2011 runway show only featured a couple of handbag styles, fret not. We have a few more pieces to show you, courtesy of the fine folks at Style.com, plus a closer look at the modified flap bags that were featured on several models during the presentation.

This still isn’t enough to evaluate the whole collection, but I like most of what I see so far. Although I don’t entirely understand the photo of the gold python bag(s) (is it one or two?), I simply adore the finish of the material and hope to see it on lots of accessories come fall. In addition to the runway bags, designs of which you guys already know I approve, I’m also digging the post-apocalyptic python flap bag up top. It looks like it’s decomposing, but against all odds, Chanel makes it work in the context of the dystopian Fall 2011 collection. Check out the photos after the jump.

JIMMY CHOO MINES BOTH ENDS OF THE DESIGN SPECTRUM FOR FALL 2011

A bag doesn’t need to come from a collection with a strong and unified design vision to be good, but more often than not, the best bags do. Starting with a clear point of view gives a set of designs a singular vision and set of references from which to pull, and knowing what those are going in to the creation process tends to lead to better and more rigorous editing, something that Jimmy Choo’s Fall 2011 Handbags could have really used.

As I look at these pictures, I started out optimistic; a good dose of structure was perhaps exactly what was needed in order to set Choo on the right track. But as I continued to click through bags, things got weirder and weirder, and not in a chic way. Several bags are covered in metal Zodiac medallions, some of them are giant, structureless puffs of fur, one in particular is very much in need of a shave. My advice to the folks at Jimmy Choo would be to keep the box clutches and start from scratch with everything else .

VALENTINO GOES FOR THE GOLD WITH SLEEK CROCODILE

If fashion seasons were like the Olympics, you could call Fall 2011 the Exotic Games – everywhere you look, brands are coming out with crocodile and snakeskin bags, seemingly each a little more drool-worthy than the last. Because trends are rarely penned in to a single cycle, though, plenty of reptilian delights have turned up in spring’s collections as well, including from brands that aren’t necessarily known for their work with exotics. That would be the case with the Valentino Va Va Voom Crocodile Shoulder Bag; Valentino produces exotic bags here and there but hasn’t made it a brand trademark, although that hasn’t stopped the company’s designers from getting in on the fun.

I’ve been a bit suspicious of this bag since the Valentino Spring 2011 runway show back in September of last year, and I still don’t entirely understand the little studded hand slot, what purpose it serves on a shoulder bag or why, exactly, anyone would ever be compelled to stick her hand in it. Aside from that, though, this simple, straightforward design is pretty nicer, particularly in dark-chocolate crocodile. The non-exotic details are nice on this bag as well, particularly the delicate metal handle attachments that adorn the top. But for five figures, the bag should be perfect, and this one isn’t quite there.$11.275.

RALPH LAUREN’S HANDBAG

Ralph Lauren’s Spring/ Summer 2011 collection was all inspired by Wild West and westerns – silk and satin shirts in cowboy style, skirts and dresses adorned with lace, long rough boots, wide belts with buckles made in shape of animal figures, etc. Very unique and stylish. The handbags from the range correspond to the same style featuring brown and camel colors and fringing.

CELINE BAGS 2011

Meaning, ‘I want Celine. I want all of the Celine bags. I want to lock them all up in my closet. It’s my brand of handbags. Give them to me now.’

I hope you’ve not only seen the movie, but also remember that line – if not, the reference may have totally confused you.

The point is, I absolutely unequivocally love Celine bags. I do not stand alone. The Celine fan base continues to grow as their Classic Box bag, Luggage Tote, and new Phantom Luggage Tote are taking the handbag-loving world by storm.

I have my name on the list for two fall bags and as I patiently wait for their July arrival, I wanted to share some other fall images sent to me. Are you loving Celine as much as I am or not buying the hype?

De Grisogono, the jewellry and watch maker, is delving deeper into the world of other accessories by launching a line of new handbags.

Completely handmade by Florentine artisans the bags are a combination of the brand’s knowledge and cutting edge technology.

Designer Fawaz Gruosi has created a lot of contrast in the bags, be it in color or materials or both. The collection includes something for all moods and personality types, from bold brights to calm pastels.

For being such an enormous, world-renowned brand, Ralph Lauren Collection handbags can be mighty hard to come by. Even though I often see full-page ads for the Ralph Lauren Ricky Bag in glossy magazines, the only place I’ve ever seen one actually for sale was in a Ralph Lauren boutique, which seemed like an oddly narrow retail scheme for a bag that could potentially garner lots of sales at department stores and high-end online retailers if customers were able to become more familiar with the brand’s accessories.

Well, it looks as though Lauren is coming around to that way of thinking. Yesterday, Ralph Lauren Collection launched on PurseBlog favorite Net-a-Porter.com, and the initial handbag offerings include the absolutely drool-worthy Ricky satchel, as well as the Ralph Lauren Collection Cartridge Shoulder Bags, Ralph Lauren Collection Tiffin Leather Tote and the Ralph Lauren Collection Lace Metallic Tote. HANDBAGS FROM VERSACE 2011

I’m as surprised by this as you are, but the handbags from Versace Fall 2011 are more than a little great. The big, soft hobos in various textures and color combinations aren’t on-trend or directional or any of those other fashion buzzwords, but they do look like they’d be functional and wearable and all of those other buzzwords that matter to people who actually need to use their handbags.

My favorites were the quilted and re-quilted versions with plenty of decorative stitching, but it would be difficult not to also enjoy the burgundy crocodile and blue python iterations. And what of the bedazzled Medusa-head evening bag? I even loved it, if only for its unabashed, enthusiastic commitment to being as Versace as humanly possible
